About Fireside Publishing House

Every community has stories worth telling. We exist to tell them well.

An independent media company rooted in Kawartha Lakes, Ontario. Built on the belief that great local journalism strengthens the communities it serves.

Our Story

Fireside was built from the conviction that local media isn't a niche concern. It is a civic one.

"A community that doesn't know its own stories cannot fully know itself."

In an era when national headlines crowd out the conversations happening on main streets and at community kitchen tables, Fireside Publishing House was founded to do something quieter and more enduring: give local life the quality of coverage it deserves.

What began as a single publication has grown into a full media operation, producing print and digital titles that serve distinct audiences across Kawartha Lakes. Each one is built on the same foundation: rigorous storytelling, genuine community investment, and the discipline to do the work well.

The name Fireside is deliberate. It suggests warmth, gathering, and the kind of conversation that lingers. That is what we believe local media can be at its best: not a feed, not a notification, but a place where a community comes to understand itself.

Our Philosophy

Four convictions that guide everything we publish.

01

Local stories matter.

The stories unfolding in a neighbourhood, at a town council meeting, or inside a family-owned business are as important as anything happening on a national stage. We treat them that way.

02

Independence is non-negotiable.

We answer to our readers and our community. Not to corporate owners or outside shareholders. That independence is the foundation of everything we do.

03

Print still has power.

A magazine on the coffee table has a permanence a scroll cannot replicate. We believe in the tangible: in ink, in paper, in something a reader chooses to keep.

04

Community comes first.

Every editorial decision we make asks the same question: does this serve the people we publish for? If the answer is yes, we move forward. If not, we reconsider.

Meet the Founders

Fireside Publishing House is the product of two people who believe deeply in the power of local media, and who have each, in different ways, dedicated their careers to it.

Roderick Benns

Publisher & Founder

Roderick Benns grew up in Lindsay, Ontario, and like many who love a place deeply, he eventually found his way back to it. But the path in between built something remarkable.

A national newspaper award winner early in his career, Benns spent decades at the forefront of Canadian journalism. He has interviewed Prime Ministers, Cabinet Ministers, and public figures, reporting from the rooms where decisions are made, while keeping his eye fixed on how those decisions land in communities like Lindsay. He is also a published author, with multiple books that demonstrate the same commitment to research, narrative, and purpose that defines his journalism.

In 2017, Benns returned to Lindsay and launched The Lindsay Advocate, a monthly magazine built on a simple conviction: a community of Lindsay's character deserved a publication worthy of it. From that foundation, he has grown Fireside Publishing House into a full media company, producing multiple titles and serving readers across Kawartha Lakes.

"I came back because I believe in this community. Everything we build at Fireside starts from that belief."

Executive Editor

Rebekah McCracken brings more than twenty years of experience across business, customer service, and organizational management, and a deep, earned familiarity with what it means to be part of the Lindsay community.

Before joining Fireside, McCracken owned and operated a retail clothing business in downtown Lindsay, where she developed an intimate understanding of local commerce, community relationships, and what it takes to build something people genuinely trust. That experience, practical, grounded, and community-facing, is woven into everything she does at Fireside.

At the company, McCracken is the operational heart of the operation. Her responsibilities span writing and editing, content creation, sales, and event planning. The full range of what keeps a publishing house running with both quality and consistency. The breadth is unusual. The standard is not.

"When you're from here, it's not just publishing. It's personal."
What We Do

Fireside is not one publication. It is a media ecosystem built to serve the full breadth of Kawartha Lakes life.

Each title has its own voice, audience, and editorial purpose, connected by shared values and a commitment to quality.
